A REMARKABLE TRANSFORMATION
The Threshing Barn is a Grade 2 listed farm building dating from the 16th century. Through the sensitive work of owners Janine and Roy Naismith, and their architect the Haddow Partnership, it has been transformed it into a striking and award-winning contemporary home.
Hidden in a small village in southern England, the barn lay derelict for many years before its current owners spotted its potential.“The character and history of old wood combined with the opportunity for open-plan living attracted us to this old barn” said Roy Naismith. “But we wanted to put a contemporary home inside the old timbers, not a faux farmhouse” Read the rest of this entry »

Hind House from John Pardey Architects, just received RIBA Awards 2009. Following are from the architect.
The clients had moved into a rather ordinary brick and tile 1970’s house on the banks of the river Loddon in early 2005 and wished to rebuild using a system-built house from the continent, but had become disillusioned with the cost and inflexibility that this offered and so approached us as they had been impressed by a house some 400 metres along the river that we had completed the previous year (The ‘Attwood house’ which went on to win the Grand Designs Best Remodeled House in Britain Award in 2007). Initially, we offered to come up with a sketch design for a small cost on the basis of no-win, no job! Foster + Partners’ design for a new five-star hotel on Bath Road, close to Heathrow Airport has been approved by the Mayor of London. The only five-star hotel in the area, it will offer a range of services, including the most extensive conference facilities of any London hotel, to serve the local community and businesses, as well as passengers using Heathrow. The Biochemistry Department at Oxford University is the largest in the UK and internationally renowned for research work in DNA, cell growth and immunity. The building achieves a new ethos of “interdisciplinary working” where the exchange of ideas is promoted in a large collective and connective environment.
