KIVI NIRIA Foyer | AAArchitects

KIVI NIRIA Foyer | AAArchitects

Supplementary to the design of the adjacent auditorium for the Royal Institute of Engineers in The Hague, AAArchitects has been asked to add a foyer to the existing passageway. Because of this double role in function as a passageway and a foyer, we have chosen to limit the physical separation to a minimum and subtly indicate it with a jump between the roof and ceiling levels. The passageway runs from the beginning to the end straight and preserves its width, whereas the foyer part broadens towards the auditorium where the busiest junction will be. By choosing not to separate the space and avoid any columns between the two spaces, both parts together can be used as one space for the biggest crowds.

Age of Man | National Geographic magazine

Oil transformed Dubai in the 1970s. The city now boasts the world’s tallest building, giant malls, and some two million residents, who depend on desalinated seawater and air-conditioning—and thus on cheap energy—to live in the Arabian desert. The March 2011 Issue of National Geographic magazine featured “Age of Man” by Elizbeth Kolbert focusing on “the Anthropocene”, a new name for a new geological epoch defined by humans’ massive impact on the planet. Kolbert, author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe, explores how human beings have so altered the planet in just the past century or two that we’ve ushered in this new epoch by building cities, vast stretches of man-made material difficult to preserve long-term, employing industrial farming, and aiding in the loss of forest habitat. Kolbert explores how population, affluence and technology are the root cause of our impact on the planet and examines the role that architecture and structure have had in bringing about this impact.
