Fully opened on July 27, 2008, sponsored by Bangkok Metropolitan Administrator, The Bangkok Art and Culture Center have been a remarkably landmark of Thai awareness of Art in an international arena. Situated at Siam – Pathumwan intersection center of Bangkok shopping area, it’s also the teenager gathering space for about three decades. It’s hard to find any activities that are free of charge around here. However, the project has been taken place by the initiative of Bangkok Governor Pijit Rattakul 8 years ago and has been pushed up by Apirak Kosayodhin, the current governor.

Designed by RGB Architects, via the competition, the building is reinforcement concrete structure. Its mass is a segment of cylinder. It’s looked very solid. Sheltered by plaster and painted wall with some granite strips. There are 11 stories 25,000 square meters which their functions are as followed:
Floor 9 Gallery,Art exhibitions: paintings, installations
Floor 8 Gallery,Art exhibitions: semi-permanent collection, temporary shows.
Floor 7 Gallery,Multi-media exhibition, photos, design Floor 6 Restaurant (December 2008) Floor 5 Gallery foyer, Auditorium: film, music recital, drama, outdoor sculpture, meeting rooms, children’s work area
Floor 4 Studio, performance art drama, dance, art workshop. Shops and restaurant, meeting rooms
Floor 3 Shops and restaurants (December 2008) Bangkok Transit System Connection
Floor 2 Shops and restaurants (December 2008)
Floor 1 Min foyer, Shops and restaurants (December 2008)
Floor B1 Library, open exhibit area Floor

The most interesting point of this architecture is not the exterior architecture; the interior architecture space is far more interesting. The Architect designed the open space penetrating from the basement thru the highest floor connecting most of all functions in the building. The exhibition spaces are both in the separated room and at the ramp corridor from 6th to top floor. It also uses of natural indirected light at the certain amount to balance the heat gain yet saving lighting energy.
All the patterns are based on the circular form either fully circle or its segment, they use curved line in all area of the building including corridor, stair landing, ceiling pattern, floor finishing pattern and the void. However, it’s disappointing by my standpoint toward the quality of craftmenship. There are many many of porous plastering surface, uncontinued connection, crack of material, unfinished joint. I know who are the main contractor and the main construction consultant here but I will leave it to you to find out if you want to.
