The KNN Media Center by DRDS is a new landmark broadcast headquarters and cultural media facility located in Busan’s Centum City. The new HQ will contribute, alongside other recently designed progressive works of architecture, to the definition of Centum City as a new cultural destination for Busan. To be completed 2010, Vanke Center is a sustainable horizontal skyscraper from Steven Holl Architects.
Hovering over a tropical garden, this ‘horizontal skyscraper’ -as long as the Empire State Building is tall- unites into one vision the headquarters for Vanke Co. ltd, office spaces, apartments, and a hotel. Due to the location in the city of Linz and restrictions on the premise boundaries, the voestalpine steel company needs to pursue alternative growth strategies. An important method of achieving this is through the strategic concentration of facilities and processes on the premises. For this reason the idea developed to concentrate the existing scattered parking spaces, which use up a lot of space, to a centrally located car park. Strategically positioning the car park has proved to be a prototypical solution when considering transformational processes of industrial premises that have limited possibilities for geographic extension. The design by ATP Architects and Engineers for a production and logistics building for Hilti has proven to be a great success. Alongside the recognition given to the project under the auspices of the Energy Globe Award Vorarlberg it has now been warmly praised in the context of the European Architecture Prize 2009 Energy + Architecture which means that the building has now received two awards in the field of sustainable building in the short time since its opening in october 2009. The opening of big movieplex cinemas in Zagreb has led to the dying out of old cinema theatres in the city centre. The City of Zagreb, who is the owner of the old cinema Lika, decided to reuse the space for new cultural facilities. Marcus O’Reilly Architects has carefully designed a low key, site responsive beach house in Sorrento on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula in Australia. The timber clad structure reinterprets a longstanding beach house tradition in the area. The National Museum for XXI Century Art (MAXXI) has completed in Rome with ten years of construction. MAXXI was an opportunity to fuse ancient with modern in the Flaminio quarter of Rome, in the area of the existing military barracks.
