Spanish firm herreros arquitectos won first prize forin the international architectural competition for the munch museum in Oslo, Norway. Following is the jury verdict;
Lambda ( Herreros Arquitectos) creates a generous invitation both to the museum and to the public access of the area in general. the location of the museum on paulsenkaia leaves the area south of the opera open to a public park and recreational landmark in the middle of the bay overlooking the fjord, in close contact both with the opera and the museum. the project strengthens the river mouth, opens the landscape and gives public access to both sides of the river all the way out to the fjord. As an admirer of Chicago and UNStudio, this Burnham Pavilion should be my first stop during next visit to Chicago. Here is from UNStudio :
Placed on the unique location in the middle of Millennium Park framed by the Lake Michigan on one site and Michigan Avenue on the other, the UNStudio pavilion relates itself to diverse city-contexts, -programs and -scales. Programmatically the pavilion invites people to, gather together, walk around and through, to explore and watch. The UNStudio pavilion is sculptural, very accessible and it acts as an urban activator. Read the rest of this entry »
The Barrow extension appears as an arrangement of timber boxes, each independently rotated and subjected to varying amounts of extruding and manipulating forces. These separate actions result in a variety of shapes, which united, create an interior of differing volumes and organizations, providing an interesting double story addition to this weatherboard house.
The extension challenges the traditional nature of timber construction. Normally lightweight and fragile, added wall thickness to different areas results in a structure with a fluctuating sense of mass. The dynamic and varying nature of these environments is further enhanced by differing window arrangements and framing techniques. Frequently the windows are setback within the frame of the wall, sometimes flush and occasionallyextruding beyond the timber frame. Read the rest of this entry »

Leeser Architecture, an internationally recognized design firm, has won an invited competition for a five-star luxury hotel in the Zayed Bay in Abu Dhabi, UAE. With the Helix, Leeser Architecture has devised a new way to consider hotel culture in the Emirates, highlighting elements that are usually unseen, and playfully enlivening those parts that traditionally remain static and mundane. This is very insightful talk by Jacek Utko, newspaper designer-former architect. My favorite hook is ” give power to designer”.Though it is a little to do with architect, it gives some insight. Check it out.
Jacek Utko is an extraordinary Polish newspaper designer whose redesigns for papers in Eastern Europe not only win awards, but increase circulation by up to 100%. Can good design save the newspaper? It just might. Newspaper designer Jacek Utko suggests that it’s time for a fresh, top-to-bottom rethink of the newspaper. (At this point, why not try it?) In his work, he’s proved that good design can help readers reconnect with newspapers. A former architect, Utko took on the job of redesigning several newspapers in former Soviet Bloc nations, starting from basic principles. He worked closely with newspaper executives to figure out the business goals of their papers, and then radically reformatted the product to fit those goals. (And he wasn’t afraid to break a few grids in the process.) Read the rest of this entry »
