Of the multitude of structures built across the country each year, few ever become elevated to a level considered the “art of architecture” by architectural critics and/or historians. The vast majority of these houses and buildings remain mundane, held to a design level that will appease the taste of that great middle group or, as Frank Lloyd Wright referred to us: “the great mediocrity.”
Architectural critics judge the impression of a building in the immediate sense, before the building has had he chance to prove itself. Historians, on the other hand, have the benefit of hindsight, advising of the building’s architectural qualities after the second, third of fourth generation has passed. Seldom is a classic realized at the moment.

Our friend OFIS has updated us small hut design called 6X11 Alpine. They demonstrate us a sustainable modification idea on previous design which has to cope with a very strict building regulations. Here is from architect:

The client bought the site together with existing construction permit for the generic project. This project comes to set a new architectural statement in the Pedregal area of Mexico City which has been neglected, because nothing new and important had happened since its beginings when “Cuidad Universitaria” was built. This is a project with very strong emotional implications. We had to understand the mood of the user, who at such this moment would not care very much for an aesthetical analisis of any place, but at the same time we wanted to create a space that can create a spritual mood, for this we refered to ancient buidings that were designed for this purpose, as the Egiptian “Mastabas” or some Mayan buildings in Palenque.
Religious rules and buildings codes in the Jewish Religion are very strict for this kind of places, and we were guided by several groups of Rabbies for this matter.

Emerging from behind its high boundary wall, the distorted roof form of Vader House interrupts the symmetrical roof line typical of Fitzroy, and breathes new life into this Victorian Terrace. The extension is a framed steel skeleton which envelopes the unusually high masonry boundary wall built prior to height restrictions, reclaiming it into the interior. The roof then responds to site setbacks which result in a distorted and subverted answer to regulations. This produces high folded internal planes, allowing double height ceilings, a mezzanine level and spacious interior. Read the rest of this entry »

Designed by Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter The Royal Playhouse is unique among many large-scale, recent public projects in that it was delivered under budget and on time while maintaining the architectural vision. The project began in 2002 with the award of first place in an open international competition, construction was complete in 2007, and the playhouse recently celebrating its grand opening in 2008. The Royal Playhouse occupies one of Copenhagen’s most important points of conjuncture, the meeting of the historic 18th century city quarter of Frederiksstaden, the city harbour, and the sea. The playhouse, firmly rooted in the context of its historic neighbourhood, takes its place among the culture institutions along the harbour, marking where the inner harbour angles and opens toward the distant Sound.
